Welcome to the Tees Barrage Website

The Tees Barrage is a Barrage across the River Tees in the North East of England. The main priority of the barrage is to control the flow of the river, protect the surrounding areas from flooding, and prevent any other effects of tidal change. This steady control means the water above the barrage is permanently held at high tide, making the river here perfect for a number of Activities and Events, such as canoeing, jet skiing, and dragon boat racing. The barrage also incorporates a 1km rowing course.

The Tees Barrage website is dedicated to giving you up to date information about the barrage, more information can be found on our About The Barrage page. We also offer information about Activities and Events going on at the barrage, along with Pictures, Nearby Attractions and Places to Stay.

London 2012 Olympics

One of the reasons for the development of the Tees Barrage is that the site has been proposed as a training camp location, for canoeists, and other water sports, for the 2012 Olympic Games, held in London. The barrage is also hoping the attract visitors and athletes to train for future Olympic and Paralympics Games, and can also be used as a training centre for athletes all year round.

Development of the Tees Barrage

The Teesside Development Corporation is responsible for the development of the Tees Barrage, along with many other projects in the region, such as the Hartlepool Marina, and Teesdale Business Park.

A competition for the design of the barrage was set by TDC, this was won by the ‘Ove’, ‘Arup’ and ‘Napper’ partnership. The construction of the barrage was started on the 4th November 1991, and finished in April 1995. This was completed by Tarmac Construction, with help from W.J. Groundwater Limited, who managed the river, diverting its route, and dewatering the area. At the time of construction, the Tees Barrage was the largest civil engineering project in the UK.

The barrage is undergoing a redevelopment project worth £4.6 million to attract more visitors, and athletes looking to train for the 2012 London Olympics. More information on our Redevelopment Page.

Saving Energy

Large quantities of natural debris such as tree branches are washed down, and usually caught by the barrage. This debris would usually be washed out to sea. The Tees Barrage and Partners feel that the future of our planet is important, and the need to save energy is a must. This is why thousands of pounds has been invested in ongoing studies, looking into the burning of this washed up debris, and the use of it for power generation in waste-to-energy power stations. More information about saving energy can be found at Saving Energy.com, one of our partnering websites.
